ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR WORK!

Graphics:
Graphics can make or break your pages!  Use them wisely as highlight or to add effects.  Remember that too many graphics clutter up your page and increase the page loading time.  Visitors don't want to wait for your page to load.  They want to see your page NOW!  Use graphics sparingly.

What's the difference between a .gif and a .jpg?

Photographs: When saving photos, the JPG (also JPEG) file format is the best choice. JPG files are relatively small and the photo quality is very good. The down side: Transparency is not an option with the JPG format.

Graphics: Text logos and line art, are examples of graphics that look great when saved in the GIF file format. GIF files yield great lines and sharp edges, while still keeping file size down. The added advantage of GIF files is that images can be saved with a "reduced color palette" (fewer colors), thus further reducing file size--very important when saving your creations for publishing on the Web. The down side: GIF files are limited to 256 solid colors.

How do I make a banner?
These directions pertain to Microsoft Image Composer that comes with FrontPage.

  • Open image composer.  *Does not come with FP2003.  Only previous versions.
  • You have a bunch of buttons on the left hand side.  Find the one that has shapes on it- a square, circle and another thingy.  When you click that button a box will appear on composer that should say Shapes.
  • Make sure that: * opacity is at 100  * close and fill are both checked off  * edge is all the way at hard
  • Make sure your color palette is not set to white. it is just the box of color to the left by the other buttons. when you click it a box pops up with lots of colors. make sure it is any color but white or you wont see it. you can always change it later.
  • Click on the square button, then take your cursor to the white part of the composer screen above.
  • Click and drag a box- rectangle- then click create in the shapes box below.
  • Now you have the basic image for a banner. to size the banner while you are drawing it so you don't have to crop it: look at the bottom right hand of composer- see the X: Y: ? there is numbers next to them?  When you start to drag your box, you will see next to the X and Y- W and H. those are the width and height of the banner shape you are dragging. so you would drag the box out until it was H:50 and W: 200 for our banner exchange.
  • Now, you have a banner sized box. this is the banner image background. you can click on it then click on the color palette to change the color.
  • To add text you press the button with the big A and a text box will appear. type the word you want- adjust the size, font and style in the text box that popped up below. when your done just click any part of the white screen and the words are now sitting on the page. you can click on them and drag them over the banner. if it doesn't fit- double click on it and you can edit it again till you have what you want.
  • You can add images too. to crop an image to fit you would click on the image then on the button to the left that looks like 2 squares over lapping each other. the box that pops up says Arrange. when you have the image clicked and want to resize it you go to scale in the arrange box-make sure keep aspect ratio is checked- then change say the height- you only want it 45 pixels high- it will automatically change the width.  or, you can click the box above the word Warps to the right- the little box above warps to the right is a crop tool.
  • To save a banner you must: always click the select all button at the top of the screen- its right under Window up top. looks like 3 small squares. once you click select all, click file, save selection as: then save as gif or jpeg- gifs load a lot faster, but jpegs are better for photos.
